Parsnip Flowered Buckwheat
(Wyeth Buckwheat)
Eriogonum heracloides  Nutt.

Ir has other common names (Hercules buckwheat, Wyeth buckwheat), but this one is preferred. It’s widespread in our area. Some years, after the ground has dried out and spring-flowers have faded, it’s the dominant bloom on valley floors at lower altitude (6 – 7000’,); its flowers dot the landscape in great numbers. The plants are characterized by clumps up to a foot or more across, narrow lanceolate leaves, rather stout stems, and fluffy cream-colored flower heads. A rosette of small pointed leaflets (“bracts”) are found on the stems well below the flower head
